Since 2011 Go Daddy has become far too expensive. I checked with technical support at Go Daddy on how to achieve the move. They had be do a back-up which took about 2 hours. They had me transfer my SQL and one other folder to my computer and then had me go to the back end of my WordPress site and export my files to my computer. I installed a new copy of WordPress at iPage and transferred my SQL to to iPage. When I tried to login to my new WordPress site it would not let me because Go Daddy was still hosting my site. My plans were to set-up the new site and then do a shutdown at Go Daddy and a redirect to iPage. The only way to accomplish this was to shut down my site at Go Daddy and a redirect to iPage. At that point I was allowed to log into my fresh WordPress site and import my files. When completed the import it said images failed to load. All of my articles which all had featured images and images inserted in my post were gone. I contacted Go Daddy to find out what happened and they wanted $150.00 and 1 months hosting to restore my files so I could recover my images. Money that I did not have. In the meantime I have developed at least 1500 broken links and 404 errors too many to count. My first thought was to start downloading images to replace images lost. I inserted new images in three or 4 articles when I realized that I might be creating a new set of headaches. I went to Go Daddy’s Facebook page and posted what happened to me. They responded after two days but did not correct the situation. I finally sent them a private message and told them that I would start writing articles about the situation of them extorting money from me to get my image files back and sharing said articles on sharing sites, which would have been a black eye for them. They quickly offered to restore my files so I could recover my images. They said it could take 7-10 days to accomplish this. My question is this. Since all of my images in articles are linked to media files do I have to wipe out my WordPress at my new location, transfer my images to my data base at iPage and re-import my WordPress files currently on my computer so the links to my images are found once again. I have not accomplished a save to my data base at iPage yet from my WordPress site yet since doing the transfer and resetting my preferences for looks and installing all of my plug-ins again. So my file base at iPage is barren except for my SQL file and the WordPress file for the new install. I have published 2 articles since moving and downloaded about 8-10 images for the 2 new articles and to start repairing the existing articles on my site. Otherwise, you’ll end up with duplicated content on the new site when carry out the new export/import. * FWIW, the original issues wasn’t GoDaddy’s fault, in my opinion. You should not have shut the old site down so that you could use the same domain name on the new site. You could have asked iPage for a temporary url on the new site, carried out the export/import, checked that the new site was ready for launch and then( and only then) transferred your domain name from the old site to the new. * Once the DNS had propagated, you could change the url in the new site by following the instructions in [Changing_The_Site_URL](http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL) and – finally – shut the old site down. * Thread Starter [scotty22](https://wordpress.org/support/users/scotty22/) * (@scotty22) * [13 years, 3 months ago](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/transfer-hosting-problem/#post-3564855) * Who is at fault is not relevant at this point. Technical support at both hosts gave me bad direction that resulted in the current situation. Neither technical support team ever suggested a temp URL before shutting down Go Daddy as I explained to both Hosts what my dilemma was. I did not say it was Go Daddy’s fault, just bad walk through of the transfer and failure to cooperate after the fact. The main fault was mine for not knowing the proper procedure for the transfer and relying on the direction of others to walk me through it. * My question now is how to save the 2 articles that I published since the move before wiping out the existing install and how to get the image files into my data base so when I re-import my WordPress data base everything is linked up a show up in the articles as they did before. * Do I tranfer the WordPress file base to my iPage file base instead of importing that file to WordPress direct and perform a back-up.
