I’m very new to WordPress and this plug-in. At one point I was able to mis-configure it to the point where it simply wouldn’t display. I wiped everything I could find and re-installed it several time but the settings were not erased. Finally it started working again. It seems if I edit the default file location, it eventually crashes and I can no longer access the plugin at all, it just shows this:

The site is experiencing technical difficulties. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.

No email comes despite the message. It just displays the host page and no plugin.

    My other issues:
#2 I can change the file upload location to ../wp-content/uploads/files and the target folder is created, but the files are uploaded to ../wp-content/uploads and the word “files” is added to the filename of the upload. Caused by leaving out trailing slash.

#3 There are index files in the file location(s) but all of them are empty and there are no files list the uploaded file list.

I left out #4 Although I have set the upload filesize to 8mb the plugin still show 2MB on the page.

It appears the main problem of the page going blank and generating the error message is relate to the uploaded files. If I delete the target upload folder and all the uploads and the index files, the plugin page appears again.

Drilling down more and deleting the uploaded files seem to fix whatever is causing this.

    Detail:
    Install plugin.
    Modify files location.
    Activate plugin.
Plugin appears and seems to work.
    Upload a file or files.
Plugin fails to update the index file and no longer works.
Delete uploaded files and plugin begins to work again.

Hi. I’m not sure what could be wrong there. The blank index.html files are placed there intentionally so people cannot navigate to your upload folder and see all the files there.

Also, the plugin will not show your WordPress’ home folder. It must be some other folder which is relative to your home dir.

IF your upload limit is reverting to 2 MB, it would likely mean that your hosting limits this size.

If you continue to have trouble, please use the support form within the plugin, as this will send me important environment details.

I hope Simple File List is working well for you.
