    Hallo WordPress Forum

I wantto setup two multisites. One with sub directory setup and one with sub domain setup. But we want these both to have the same main site.

    One multisite
    mainsite.com
    mainsite.com/one
    mainsite.com/two

    Second multisite
    mainsite.com
    a.mainsite.com
    b.mainsite.com
    c.mainsite.com

    Can this be done?

  • No, it can’t be done. Two multisites cannot be installed in the same directory. What could be done instead is you can install a separate multisite on a different directory.

    Multisite one:
    a.multisite.com
    b.multisite.com
    c.multisite.com

    Multisite two:
    multisite.com/A/one
    multisite.com/A/two
    multisite.com/A/three

Given that, there might be workarounds that don’t require you to have two installations, but may require some hacking. I have no clue about that.

We asked in a forum for webmaster and said the same mainsite means one multisite only!!! But the multisite can’t take domains and folders TOGETHER!!! We have thirty two singlesites SOME with folders SOME with domains and SOME with sub domains. ONE site is MAIN! Is there a setup to make them in TWO multisites or ONE multisite setup with SAME MAINSITE? We tried domain MU plugin but I can’t make it.

Sorry for language. no time for better. if not good I can rewrite. Same mainsite is the important for us and find a way to use the mutlisite setup.

A programer tells us it can be only possible with three sites

one site singlesite with the MAIN SITE

    second site multisite with FOLDERS

third site multisite with SUB DOMAINS AND DOMAINS

Before we accept this setup we want ot be sure it cant be setup inother way using only ONE or TWO multisites ONLY!

Above you write about workaround. Where can we learn about it?

We had a second call with the programer and now he tell us that what we ask with SAME mainsite cant be possible and he did not understand it. We are still at nowhere.

Your developer is correct. What you are describing is not a multisite use case. You’re looking for something else that will require a lot of custom WordPress development.

    I wantto setup two multisites.

    OK.

One with sub directory setup and one with sub domain setup.

Different but doable provide they are using different URLs and host names. It could be the same server but use a different vhost. I’m not seeing any problems so far till I get to this part:

But we want these both to have the same main site.

    One multisite
    mainsite.com
    mainsite.com/one
    mainsite.com/two

    Second multisite
    mainsite.com
    a.mainsite.com
    b.mainsite.com
    c.mainsite.com

Yeah. That’s not going to work. Ever. That’s not how multisite is designed.

You may be able to do something similar as Wired.com did. That presentation was an excellent example of when not to use multisite.

But that is a solution using custom post types and a lot of well understood integration. You’re trying to mix two designs that together are not compatible with multisite.

we found a solution with TWO multisites with TWO DIFERENT main sites but the second mainsite will forward to first ALL requests but not these to wpadmin. They tell us it is the most close to what we want…. We will try it next week…. But workarounds are still to consider. We have to learn before next week.

Thank you so much for your help!!! We have MANY details of our singlesites to consider! Traffic is increased and the costs of singlesites are VERY high…. We dont have custom types but we will tell the programers what we learn…. Thank you!

We met the programers and explained our idea. They tell us they do it with two multisites without the forwarding. CLEAN!!! We thank you so MUCH everybody!!!
