Recently, I have been having trouble updating rules, no matter automatically or manually. And notification below keeps showing up, which can not be dismissed though a dismiss button is given.

The last rules update for the Wordfence Web Application Firewall was unsuccessful. The last successful update check was July 7, 2020 5:06 pm, so this site may be missing new rules added since then. You may wait for the next automatic attempt at July 21, 2020 5:07 pm or try to Manually Update by clicking the “Manually Refresh Rules” button below the Rules list.

When I try to update rules manually, I get this message.

No rules were updated. Please verify your website can reach the Wordfence servers.

I have checked rules.php, whose last modified date matches the time when I do the manual update, so the file should be writable. And Tool/Diagnostics said OK about connecting to wordfense server and back to this site. Also, de & reactivating wordfense won’t work. Plus I have had wordfense updated to latest recently, and this problem seems to show up afterwards.

  • Thanks for reaching out.

Can you send a diagnostic report to wftest [at ] wordfence [dot] com? You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence Tools > Diagnostics page. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

Note: For the fastest response time, please make sure and add any information or questions directly to this ticket and not the email address above unless asked.

    The diagnostic report was sent.

I received it. Can you try deleting the entire wflogs directory in /wp-content? Wordfence should rebuild the folder automatically. Try updating the rules afterwards.

I just tried the given steps. The directory wflogs and the files inside is recreated, including rules.php. However, the same notification & message still pops up like before.

Does anyone have ideas how to solve the problem? Please help, thanks.

We saw by looking at the diagnostics page that the PHP variable for max_execution_time is set to 300. Can you try setting that to 30? Also, you PHP variable for memory_limit is set to 128M. Can you change that to 256M?

You may have to ask your hosting provider for help changing these. They can be set in php.ini, .user.ini, or in the PHP variables manager in your hosting CPanel (if available).

Thanks for replying. I just set those variables according to your advice. Afterwards, I refreshed the WordPress administer panel and the problem remained the same. Then I deleted the whole wflog directory and refreshed again. This time the notification banner did disappear. However, when I manually update rules, it still prompt failed. So I wonder whether this is a one-time solution.

Send a new diagnostics report so I can see if the changes stuck.

The diagnostics have been sent. I am pretty sure that the changes are deployed for I have checked after modifying php.ini.

Can you reach out to me at that same address you emailed to before? Respond here when you do.

I believe I did. It should be sent from my college e-mail address ending with hust.edu.cn to [email protected] just as before. And I just sent another one in case it was stuck.

I saw the diagnostics. I was asking if you could email me at that address, not send a diagnostics report. πŸ™‚

Oops, xD. Sure! If there is any further suggestion concerning the issue, it would be very helpful for you to contact me via the same address that have sent those diagnostics.

Since we are gonna have the conversation through email, I should probably just mark the post as resolved.
