 * This plugin used to work well. I can still move the categories around on screen.
   But when I mouse over the Update button, the legend “javasscript:;” (without
   the inverted commas) appears in the bottom-left of my screen, and clicking on
   the button does nothing. Any ideas?

 * Check with other plugins possible a JavaScript conflict. I suggest to de-activate
   one by one to identify the problem.

 * Well, I’ve now tried that, but no success, I’m afraid.

 * Can you also try to switch to a default WordPress theme as the problem may be
   the once you currently use.

 * I’ve now tried Twenty Eleven and Twenty Twelve, but neither made any difference.

 * The plugin is 100% functional on a default WordPress theme and no other plugins.
   Possible may be your WP install, possible a corrupted file, try to re-install.
 * But which is the exact JavaScript error message you see?

 * This worked for me.
    1. login to your database
    2. In wp_usermeta table, find the user name you want to update
    3. set wp_user-settings to null

 * [@cloudhostingsource](https://wordpress.org/support/users/cloudhostingsource/):
   I’m not trying to update a user name, but to change the order in which my categories
   appear.
 * I have the same problem on two different WordPress installations (one of which
   is my localhost LAMPP test site), and they both work fine in every other respect.
   I have tried reinstalling the plugin, but that made no difference either.
 * I don’t see an error message. I just get “javasscript:;” (without the inverted
   commas) appearing in the bottom left of the screen when I hover over the Update
   button — and when I click on that button, nothing happens.

 * you don’t update the username, instead you update the wp_user-settings field
   that belongs to that user. you need to set the wp_user-settings field of that
   user to null first. when you log back in again, WordPress will load the default
   setting for that user.

 * Well, I’ve now tried that too, cloudhostingsource, but I still can’t move the
   categories. Maybe what I have is the default setting, so your suggestion has
   achieved what you intended that it should, but I still can’t move the categories.
 * I have now noticed that a notice saying Items Order Updates appears at the top
   of the page, on a yellow background, when I hit the Update button. I hadn’t noticed
   before because I have quite a few categories and was attempting to move some
   lower down, but having now experimented with those at the top, I can see the
   notice appearing on each occasion.
 * But the categories on the front end stay exactly where they were.
