 * Free user. This morning, the latest Yoast update failed with this error:
 * Update Failed: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN”> 500 Internal
   Server Error Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or
   misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the
   server administrator and inform them of the time the error occurred, and the
   actions you performed just before this error. More information about this error
   may be available in the server error log.

    After failure, page templates using php the_content did not show the content
   on the front end, though content showed as existing when edit post was opened.
   Restoring the back up to before the Yoast SEO update was attempted “fixed” the
   problem.
 * The page I need help with: _[[log in](https://login.wordpress.org/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fsupport%2Ftopic%2Fupdate-failed-48%2F%3Foutput_format%3Dmd&locale=en_US)
   to see the link]_

 * [@plugintester2018](https://wordpress.org/support/users/plugintester2018/) Can
   you please try the following:
    - Deactivating and reactivating the plugin then run the update again from Dashboard
      → Updates.
       If that does not work, in rare cases updating via the admin doesn’t
      work and you need to manually update the plugin via FTP by following the steps
      found here: [https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-can-i-update-my-free-plugin/#ftp](https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-can-i-update-my-free-plugin/#ftp)
