 * Good day,
 * I’m sorry if someone posted about this before or if the issue has been resolved,
   but I need help with a recent error I’ve been getting when attempting to update
   the GIVE plugin on an NPO website I do work for.
 * Every time I try to update I get the message: “Update Failed: Internal Server
   Error”. After this message, the site also gets stuck in maintenance mode, for
   which I have to delete the maintenance file.
 * I tried looking online for a solution, but others have had similar issues but
   only show you how to delete the maintenance file or the error ends up being unrelated.
 * Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 * The page I need help with: _[[log in](https://login.wordpress.org/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fsupport%2Ftopic%2Fupdate-failed-internal-server-error-2%2F%3Foutput_format%3Dmd&locale=en_US)

 * Hi [@purpleweb](https://wordpress.org/support/users/purpleweb/),
 * Happy to clarify.
 * For a bit of context, when WordPress, plugins, or themes are being updated automatically
   there are few steps involved, and if any step fails for any reason you get the“
   An automated WordPress update has failed to complete” error. If this is happening
   again and again then the problem can be with resources and limitations on your
   web hosting. Let’s try to check the steps and see where problem exists.
 * 1. In automated update WordPress downloads the new package from either the WordPress
   repository or plugin or theme’s author’s website.
    2. After the download is complete
   WordPress unpacks the downloaded package. 3. WordPress puts your website in maintenance
   mode and removes the current files to replace them with new files.
 * If any step from above given steps breaks between then the problem will come
   up of an automated WordPress update have failed.
 * Try updating the plugin manually via FTP.
