 * I was trying to install the 2.9.2 update and it failed. I have been having another
   issue with file permissions for the theme I am using and I don’t know if the
   2 are related.
    Here is the message I get. I am doing the auto upgrade and not
   manual
 * Downloading update from [http://wordpress.org/wordpress-2.9.2.zip](http://wordpress.org/wordpress-2.9.2.zip).
 * Unpacking the update.
 * Could not copy files.
 * Installation Failed

 * It could be a server config issue. Have you tried running a [manual upgrade](http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress)?

 * not yet, i was about to.
    it seems like something in general is messed up. yesterday,
   i tried to install a theme using the dashboard and it failed, so I just manually
   put it on the server and now the permissions are all messed up (even though i
   have rwx setup in such a way it should work (chmod 666 for isntance).
 * I’ll try the manual install and see what happens. maybe it will clear up everything.

 * I did a manual upgrade but now when I am in the dashboard and click on appearance/
   editor, I get this message
    Sorry, can’t edit files with “..” in the name. If
   you are trying to edit a file in your WordPress home directory, you can just
   type the name of the file in.
 * before, it would take me a list of all the files (index.php, configs, headers
   etc).

 * I tried a different theme and deactivating all plugins like suggested here [http://quirm.net/2009/09/04/basic-wordpress-troubleshooting/](http://quirm.net/2009/09/04/basic-wordpress-troubleshooting/)

   but i still can’t get to the editor.

 * Sounds like a theme problem. Try switching to the default theme to confirm this.

 * I tried the default theme and I still get the same message.

 * Where exactly is the site hosted? And what urls have you entered in Admin/Settings/
   General?

 * rubyfruitradio.com is the site.
    the url for all the wordpress stuff is [http://www.rubyfruitradio.com/wordpress](http://www.rubyfruitradio.com/wordpress)
 * I’ve had wordpress installed for at least 3 years, maybe 4 and have never had
   a problem. It was not until I went in and tried to edit under appearance that
   things broke and then after the update, things really broke.
    I have tried to
   get to editor via the default theme and I get the same sorry message.

 * If you’re using WP to run the site under the main domain (as opposed to the wordpress
   sub-folder), you should review [Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory](http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory).
   I’ve got a feeling that you’ve pulled this off in a non-standard way that’s now
   biting back.

 * I looked at that and it’s how I have it setup…
    [http://rubyfruitradio.com/wordpress/wp-admin/](http://rubyfruitradio.com/wordpress/wp-admin/)
   is where I go to login. I double checked all of that stuff and it matches up
   with this link.
 * WP has been installed for 3 years and worked fine until I installed a new theme
   manually in the folder and then manually installed the update.

 * A theme problem has been ruled out as using the default theme doesn’t help. A
   manual upgrade shouldn’t cause this problem either. Have you tried deactivating**
   all** plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate
   the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

 * I tried deactivating the plugins very early in the process and that didn’t solve
   the problem.
