 * *make a backup copy of your files AND database before doing any updates
    *if
   you are using an old theme or plugins — they may not work perfectly with php
   update to 7.1 – prepare for that to happen (I speak from personal experience)*
   if your webhosting vendor offers a staging site — please test your updates in
   a staging site before updating live website

 * I have not recently updated from a version like 3.1 to 5.0+
    I would use a staging
   site (or local development environment) to test before updating in live site -
   Update PHP version -Prepare for older plugins + theme to have issues -Update
   WordPress version

 * Before your backup file and mysql
    Then with PHP 5.2.4 3.1 => 3.1.2, 3.1.4, 3.2.1,
   3.3.1, 3.3.3, 3.4.2, 3.5.2, 3.6.1 stop 3.7. The final steep PHP 5.6.20 WordPress
   5.2. Info for backup , exendends upgrade and info from 3.7 to 5.2 **Upgrading

 *
    Ps. with all plugins disabled and default theme. Minimum PHP Version Required
   to run WordPress from 3.2 to 5.1 is PHP 5.2.4
