 * I’m not entirely clear on what you mean here. It sounds as though you may have
   set up a custom functions.php file within your copy of the TwentyTwentyThree
   theme – is that right?
 * It’s true that if you update the theme – it would overwrite the existing folders
   and files – this is expected (rather than a bug).

 * Yes, that’s what I mean.
 * Is it possible to keep functions.php as it is, and don’t overwrite it ? Thank
   you

 * Hi [@hqin](https://wordpress.org/support/users/hqin/) – in order not to overwrite
   your customized/added files whenever there’s a theme update, you can use a child
   theme. I recommend using the [Create Block Theme](https://wordpress.org/plugins/create-block-theme/)
   plugin to create your child theme.
 * Alternatively, you can use the [Code Snippets plugin](https://wordpress.org/plugins/code-snippets/)
   to avoid having to add a functions file to the theme in the first place.
