Update Theme Loses Everything?
If you made changes to that theme’s files then yes an update will wipe out your changed.
What if I simply don’t update the theme?
That’s not an option I would recommend as some of those updates are security related. However if you’ve made wholesale changes to your theme then try these steps.
– Make a copy of that theme you’ve modified into a new directory. Call in my-theme or something unique.
– Update that my-theme/style.css file and change the theme’s name to something unique and different from your current theme name. Remember that this is the copy. Call it My Theme.
– Via the WordPress dashboard activate that “My Theme”.
With a different unique name then that copy will not be updated.

I added pages, menu items and blog posts. is that considered changes to the theme?

Nope! 😉
Changes are made to the theme when you modify the theme files. Just adding pages, menu items and blog post will not modify the theme files. Those live in your WordPress database.
It should be safe for you to update that theme if you haven’t made changes to the theme files. It sounds like you haven’t.
If you’re really concerned then just make a backup of the full works.

That way if something goes wrong (and it really shouldn’t) then you can put it all back the way it was before you updated. Back ups are useful that way…
Thanks. That’s a load off. I was so concerned that I was going to have to abandon my .org website and return to WordPress.com. I’m pretty good getting around there, but am mostly lost at ww.wp.xz.cn.
Thanks Jan. You’ve been very helpful. Glad it was an easy issue.
I forgot to click “resolved” Sorry.
