Update Themes Multisite Installation

    Hello everyone,
    I am seriously considering moving some of my clients websites to a multisite installation. I have tried it, tested and it would make my life easier and convenient I think. However, I will be creating a network of around 15 sites and I will be using 15 different themes on the multisite installation.

    However (and I cannot find an answer about this), if a new update of WordPress becomes available, I guess I need to ensure that all my themes on the network are compatible with the WordPress update before upgrading. Does it mean that if you have a network with 50 sites with different themes each but only one of your subsites themes are not compatible with the new version of WordPress, you would not be able to update your wordpress network installation because of just one site?

    Could anyone provide some insights on this?

    Yes, depending on the complexity of your network (themes, plugins), you may have to delay your uograde until the plugins/themes become compliant with a new WP release, or drop a theme/plugin that all of a sudden is not longer compatible.

    This usually is something to look at when major WP versions are released. This is less of a problem when smaller releases (patches) come up.

    Kind of. It means you have to decide who’s more important: Everyone else on your network, or one theme.

    It’s the same as it is for any support gig, though. You should always be testing your stuff for the customers before blindly upgrading them.

    Thanks a lot Sandra and Mika for your responses! Very useful.

    It seems that multisite will be an option for future clients rather than old ones as some of the themes I used for them then are not 100% compatible with multisite. The theme’s developers may correct this in future updates but I do not think I can rely on that assumption for all themes.

    And I totally agree about careful testing before upgrading for customers. This is a must!
