 * I’m still using WordPress 3.3.2.
    Once I tried to update it to newer version,
   but this didn’t work out well. I had changed some things in the HTML of the theme(
   Twenty Eleven 1.3), for example: I removed the text ‘powered by WordPress’ from
   the bottom of all the pages’. After updating WordPress, the changes had all been
   set to default again and I had to do it all over again.
 * Is it possible for me to update to a newer version of WordPress without losing
   all the changes I made??

 * Were you aware that your site is currently running a very real risk of being
   hacked. You need to upgrade WordPress asap.

 * I know, I want to, but I’m afraid my website will change as well. What are the
   risks? Will changes that I made in the theme disappear then?

 * I would suggest that you turn your custom 2011 theme into a new standalone theme,
   then re-upload a fresh, unpacked, copy of the twentyeleven folder to wp-content/
   themes using [FTP](http://codex.wordpress.org/FTP_Clients) or whatever file management
   application your host provides.

 * Then you should be able to update WordPress safely – which I suggest you do asap.
   Cleaning up a site after a hack is a lot of work! In future, do not edit any
   themes downloaded from wordpress.org. Instead, create a [child theme](http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes)
   for your changes.
