# Updates keep crushing WordPress

 * I have installed the UpdraftPlus on 10 different sites. Every time I want to
   update either of them, wordpress crashes and I have to backup from the hosts
   backup. Neither do I get access to the updraftPlus settings nor deleting it from
   the wp-content / plugins helps.
 * I am using a Genesis/Dynamik setup on all the installations.
    Might there be
   an incompatibility?

 * > Every time I want to update either of them, wordpress crashes
 * What are the symptoms of the crash? That the update doesn’t complete, and it
   remains on the “update” page showing an in-progress update? Or something else?
   Afterwards, is the site in maintenance mode, or a blank screen?
 * If you let me know, I can advise what to look at next.
 * In either case, restoring a backup would be overkill. To see the site again,
   you can just either remove the file .maintenance, or the directory wp-content/
   plugins/updraftplus, depending on which way it is (more info on how WP updates
   plugins: [https://updraftplus.com/faqs/wordpress-crashed-when-updating-updraftplus-what-can-i-do/](https://updraftplus.com/faqs/wordpress-crashed-when-updating-updraftplus-what-can-i-do/)).

 * OK … I will try with another page, where I had not done the update yet:
 * – I start the update from within the plugin page.
    – Well, it worked. No problems.
   Trying another one …
 * – Updating from 1.12.17 to 1.12.32
    – Worked also. Next one …
 * – Updating from 1.12.29 to 1.12.32
    – Worked as well. IS there a difference between
   Version 1.12.32 and 1.12.30?
 * – Trying next one. From 1.12.23 to 1.12.32
    – No problems. I am amazed.
 * – Tha last remaining Site that needs an update. From 1.12.23 to 1.12.32
    – Again,
   it worked.
 * What happened before:
    After starting the update it gave a error message, which
   I can not recall and the front end was stuck in the maintenance screen. Sometimes
   it helped to delete the Updraft folder via ftp. Sometimes it did not. Then I
   was using a backup an recovered the last setting before the update.
 * I am sorry, when I have caused some confusion.
 * How can I change a previously set rating?

 * Hi,
 * Thanks. To get out of maintenance mode, just use FTP to remove the file “.maintenance”
   in your WP root directory. (Your FTP program may need to have a “show dot files”
   setting toggled to show filenames beginning with a .).
 * The “review” link on the plugin page can be used again to edit/update the review;
   i.e. click:

 * Based on the description, I’d guess that you updated at a time when the server
   was overloaded. When WP updates a plugin (N.B., plugins themselves don’t do anything
   in this process), it downloads the new zip, unzips it, then copies the files
   into place (i.e. exactly the same as if you did that by hand). UD is larger than
   the average plugin (since it contains SDKs for several cloud storage products,
   e.g. Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon, etc.), so, if the hosting company is having
   a problem, then that can take longer than average. Unfortunately, WordPress handles
   that process being aborted really badly.
 * David
