 * How did you originally do the customizations?

 * hanks for responding!–i went to “appearance” on the left-hand side of the dashboard,
altered the “Stylesheet.css” and the “Visual Editor Stylesheet (editor-style.
css)” of the theme I’m using…

 * Oh, and then your theme was updated, right?
 * Theme updates completely replace files, and you had modified the files directly,
so those modified files were replaced with the newest version of the theme’s
   unmodified files.
 * Do you have a backup you can restore from? If not, I’m afraid those changes are
gone, though you might want to ask your hosting provider if they have a backup.
 * For theme modifications, we recommend creating a child theme, which is basically
just the changed files of a parent theme, so the parent theme can be updated
without affecting what’s in your child theme. Here are some guides on that:

 * I also recommend keeping regular backups: [https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups](https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups)
