Aside from troubleshooting the specific problem I am having, please advise me as to whether I could just delete the nextgen-gallery folder and replace it with the newest version. Would that cause problems with my previous images and posts?

Sounds like a file permissions issue – have you checked that?

This is a Windows OS. And other plugins install and upgrade without a problem.

Could it still be a file permission issue? I’m thinking, no, but I could be wrong.

@fritz.barnes – You may need to manually remove the /nextgen-gallery/ folder from your plugins folder then re-install NextGEN Gallery from under Plugins > Add New … Search (for NextGEN Gallery).

It could be a permissions issue that the WordPress plugin updater is not able to get around in this instance but using the manual method noted above should correct that going forward.
