I just went to upgrade a forum I have, my wifes wp blog, and my wp blog. The first two went very well – I backed them up and upgraded – no problem. Then, I guess because of the repetition, I forgot to backup mine before I clicked transfer on my ftp to upgrade. As soon as I clicked it, I remembered. So it was too late and I just crossed my fingers and hoped for the best.
It figures… I ftp everything, then go to
    http://www.insuranceshoppers.net/blog1/wp-admin/upgrade.php
and the screen is blank?? I completely understand that I’m an idiot, but is there any reason for this and anything that can be done to fix it?
I’m sure you’ll need more info from me. Thank you VERY much for your help!

  • Files might not have uploaded correctly. Revisit Upgrading WordPress and delete the appropriate files and reupload the new files.

I tried that and it’s still blank. If anybody thinks they can fix it using my ftp information or file manager for my website, I’d happily communicate that info to you by email and pay you top dollar for your time.

I didn’t deactivate any of my plugins before I started the upgrade either. Could that be the problem?
Although, I didn’t deactivate the plugins on my wife’s blog that I upgraded and it went perfectly.

If anybody thinks they might be able to fix this, my email address is [email protected]
I could give you my ftp and/or file manager info for my server and I could pay you for your effort.
    Thanks!

I would think since all the .php’s it needs to do the upgrade successfully are still there, I would just need to make changes to the ones that might be causing the problem. This is still fixable, right?

    >>Could that be the problem?<<

    Possible.

FTP into your server and download your wp-content/themes and wp-content/plugins to your hard drive.

Then try deleting *all* the files on your server. The entire WordPress installation. Every last thing. Get yourself a brand-spanking new download and unzip it (could be that something got corrupted). Upload all the files.

Go through the upgrade process (that’s what it’ll ask you to do is upgrade – because all of your posts and stuff are in the database, and should be just fine.)

    Let us know what happens.

Before I do that, I want to completely understand where the actual content of the posts I’ve been making is stored (I’m obviously not very tech savvy). If the only thing I have stored on my hard drive that is left from the original blog is wp-content/themes and wp-content/plugins and everything else is brand new, where is it retrieving the content from if the upgrade works okay?

    >>I want to completely understand where the actual content of the posts I’ve been making is stored<<

    I’ll quote my original reply:

“because all of your posts and stuff are in the database”

If you delete files from your server, you’re deleting files. You aren’t touching the database. You have to log into your database (or write a PHP query and run it) to do that.

Ahhh, thanks doodlebee. I didn’t understand the database was seperate. I thought the database just included all my files. Now that I understand correctly, I feel more comfortable with the process. I’ll get started and let you know what happens.

I did it and got this message on my wp-admin/upgrade.php page…

There doesn’t seem to be a wp-config.php file. I need this before we can get started. Need more help? We got it. You can create a wp-config.php file through a web interface, but this doesn’t work for all server setups. The safest way is to manually create the file.

    What should I do?

    Have a look at this.

edit your wp-config-sample.php file. Just put in the right connection settings (like you did the first time you set it up) and save the file as “wp-config.php”, upload and go.

Well, I use Yahoo web hosting and they setup my database name for me automatically 9 months ago. I’ve been on the phone with them for the past hour just trying to find out the database name. So far, they are telling me they have no way of knowing what the database name is. Is there any way of finding out if they can’t?

    What?!?

    OMG – Yahoo *sucks*.

can you not log into your Yahoo hosting account? Is there not an area where you can see your databases?

What I’m finding from a google search is that under yahoo geocities, your database host name is always “mysql”. You should be absle to log into your control panel and look at your databases and see what the name and username is. Hopefully the password too – if you can’t, you should be able to change it.

If I’m not able to find it out through Yahoo and I need to change it, what is involved then?
