 * I’ve been asked to update a WordPress site that uses a very old version of WordPress–
   can’t even see which one. The dashboard looks nothing like current versions and
   I can’t see an admin tab or an updates tab in order to update it.
 * Any suggestions? The site is [http://www.hamanaafrica.co.uk](http://www.hamanaafrica.co.uk/)
 * Thanks

 * Go to [http://www.hamanaafrica.co.uk/wp-admin](http://www.hamanaafrica.co.uk/wp-admin)
   is there an update tag there? If so, be careful it doesn’t damage the theme as
   well. If you can, back up the theme folder first before the upgrade.

 * you are using version 2.2.1
 * next up, you’ll need this link:
    [http://wordpress.org/download/release-archive/](http://wordpress.org/download/release-archive/)
 * And finally:
    [http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended](http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended)
 * You’ll need to go incrementally maybe 2.3, 2.7, 2.9 then the auto update may
   work
 * I’m not sure the exact increment sequence, but that seems good judging by the
   abvove article I linked
 * deactivate all plugins first. Many will be incompatible with the new versions
 * Your theme may be as well…..

 * Thanks for that – I’m going to redo the whole site as it’s way out of date so
   it won’t be a disaster if I lose stuff but I’ll try and back up first.

 * Yeah, just back up all the files and the database. That way if anything goes
   south, you can just restore from those backups and try again
