# Upgrading failed

 * I get this error when I try to automatically upgrade.
 * “Downloading update from [http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.0.1.zip…](http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.0.1.zip…)
 * Unpacking the update…
 * Could not create directory.: /home/wildlife/public_html/wp-content/upgrade/wordpress-
   3.tmp
 * Installation Failed”
 * Any ideas on what’s wrong?

 * temporarily chmod the `/wp-content` directory to 777 with ftp client or host’s
   file manager
    do the upgrade, then chmod back to 755 hopefully it will work normally
   after that

 * I chmod the file to 777 and tried the upgrade. Here is what I get now.

 * Unpacking the update…
 * Incompatible Archive.: PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) : Unable to find End of Central
   Dir Record signature
 * Installation Failed”
 * I can’t believe that it’s telling me that the file is not a zip, it’s wordpress’s
   own file.
 * Any ideas on this error?

 * your host may not allow this – ask them

 * Thanks for the help.
 * I contacted hostgator and they said that they allowed this sort of stuff so I’m
   assuming that it’s a corrupt file on my end now so I will try to re-install wordpress
   and see what happens.

 * I got the exact same error, but I fixed it. I did this:
 * 1) I uninstalled WP
    2) I upgraded my hosting account (didn’t have much space
   left before I tried to upgrade WP) 3) Installed WP again 4) Upgraded WP
 * The space might have been irrelevant, or not… try uninstalling and reinstalling
   WP first… If it doesn’t work, check how much space you have left.
