Upgrading SSL, will it interrupt my WordPress?

    i am looking at purchasing a dedicated ssl from geotrust through my web-host, because i think google is trying to push the whole internet to be https:// soon.

    But i don’t to break my wordpress site whenever this dedicated SSL from geotrust through my web-host is purchased and installed. Here’s a quick explanation of my wordpress site:

    – currently running wordpress newest version (at this time, is 4.9.4) and keep it up-to-date,

    – currently using basic “twenty seventeen” theme and keep it up-to-date,

    – currently using four basic plugins, and I keep them up-to-date: the names of the plugins are wordfence security free version, akismet anti-spam, yoast seo, sassy social share

    – the only thing i do on this blog is write and publish Posts.

    What sort of things should I keep in mind, or check, as I purchase and activate a dedicated SSL certificate on my website through my web-host from geotrust, with all of these things in mind with how my wordpress site works so that my site doesn’t break or anything?

    Check to see if your host supports the free LetsEncrypt certificates.

    Once you have the certificate installed, install the plugin “better search replace”. use it to search for http://example.com and replace in https://example.com in all tables.

    That’s it, you’re done.

    Can i ask what the reasoning behind the free LetsEncrypt certificate is? Because, I do not think my host has that, and I was wanting to go with the geotrust one, because of what’s about to start happening with Google and Google Chrome’s sending that prompt out to people who try to access websites that are http:// and making them see that Prompt about how they’re connection is not secured. I really dont want users who use chrome to surf, to get to my website and get that prompt.

    So i was thinking that the GeotTrust one that i know my host offers would be the best choice..?

    Understsood. And that makes a lot of sense, what you are saying, Steve, thank you for that.

    I have confirmed that my web-host only allows the geotrust one, so, I would have to still go with that. But then, assuming that all purchases and activates and everything, I am unclear on how I can reach my dashboard and log-in in order to be able to use that “better search and replace” in the way that you say, if, my WordPress site will be down, immediately after the installation and activation of the SSL certificate?

    No, your site will not be down. Once they’ve installed the certificate, login to wp-admin as usual and install and run “better search replace” as outlined above.

    And so when I get to the point where I’m doing the Search and Replace, on the field that says “Search for”, I’m going to enter

    http://mywebsiteaddress.com

    ?

    On the field that says “Replace with”, I’m going to enter

    https://mywebsiteaddress.com

    ?

    And then I am going to use the CTRL button on my keyboard, to literally pick every single table in that “Select tables” window?

    And then am I going to leave both “Case-Insensitive?” and “Replace GUIDs?” unchecked? That is the default.

    And then, can I first check the “Run as dry run”, to ensure that my site isn’t broken, before I do it for-real? How are those results displayed so that I can ensure things all look to be ok, so that I have confirmed that it will not break my site before doing it for real?

    I’m sorry to ask such elementary questions, but I just really want to make sure I have the most completely accurate idea of how to do this before I do it.

    Yes.

    Backup your site first; if anything goes awry, you can use the backup to recover.

    By the way, it’s good you’re asking questions up front rather than trying to recover a borked site. 🙂

    So in case something goes awry:

    I understand there are two different Backup and Replaces I’d have to do, though, right..? I mean, isn’t one of them a MySQL Database Backup that you have to do in phpmyadmin, and one of them is a WordPress-related backup that just has to do with my site settings and stuff, right..?

    I mean, I wouldn’t know which of those two I need to do..? Is it both..?

    For this, you need only backup the database.

    Suggestion: Find a local WordPress meetup group via meetup.com and start going to meetings. I think you need some local WP folks you can bounce things off of and maybe sit down over coffee to do things like this together.
