 * Greetings WordPress RockStars…
 * A potential client has approached me to upgrade his WordPress installation from
   2.2 (!!) to 3.9.1. I have never attempted such a large leap. Any advice? Things
   to look out for?
 * I can see that many of the plugins are no longer necessary, based on functionality
   that has been added to the core. And some may still be needed, but haven’t been
   maintained – in which case I will need to find replacements.
 * But what else? Will the db tables be compatible? Should I do incremental upgrades?
   What isn’t coming to mind?
 * Thanks,
    ~KJ

 * I would think incremental would be the best route.

 * Thanks for the link. Based on this paragraph:
 * If you plan on upgrading across more than two major releases, please consider
   upgrading incrementally to avoid potential conflicts and minimise the risks of
   database damage. For example, if you plan on upgrading from 2.5 to 3.9.1, upgrade
   to 2.7 first, followed by 2.9, and finally 3.9.1. Essential, it’s okay to skip
   one release, but never skip TWO when upgrading.
 * … should I be doing 2.2 –> 2.5 –> 2.7 –> 2.9 –> 3.9.1?
 * It says not to skip two releases, but advises to jump from 2.9 to 3.9.1 … I want
   to make sure I’m understanding that correctly.
 * Many thanks,
    ~KJ

 * That’s a bit of an odd leap, I think someone just left something out. One you
   get to 2.9, proceed to 3.1, 3.3, 3.5, 3.7, and at 3.7 you can finally use the
   handy one-click updater (no more manually moving files) so your move to 3.9.1
   should be smooth.

 * Here’s a new and hopefully clearer version. 🙂

 * Make sure you get a good backup of BOTH the files and database before you start.

   If the site is not too big or complex, it just may be more expedient to start
   with a new site on 3.9.1, and copy/paste, rework their old content into the new
   one.

 * Totally, backup for sure.
 * If content is your only concern, you could probably get away with an import/export
   too (via the Tools section of the blog’s Dashboard). No promises though, hence
   the backup. 🙂
