 * What do the file permissions have to be to upload files without using FTP (ie.
installing a theme or plugin via wordpress). I have the folder of the installation
chowned to my username and the webserver group and it’s chmoded to 775 I think.
I also have the wp-content file 777 i beleive. The reason why I can’t use FTP
is because this website is for someone else and I don’t really want to make them
an FTP account on the server unless I absolutly have to.

 * 755 is normal for wordpress. You should be able to upload themes and plugins
   with no problem.

 * I still am having issues. I created a folder inside home called www to house
all my websites. I have apache virtual hosts set up to point to the document
roots. An example would be /home/www/website and I have /home/www/website and
everything inside chowned to my username and the webserver’s group. I have the
folder and the wp-content folder along with everything inside chmoded to 775
and I still get the FTP info page to install a theme or plugin. When I was on
the free host I don’t think it asked for the details but I also think i had the
wp-content folder set to 777 but I shouldn’t need to have it set to 777 because
the webserver has direct access…unless I should flop the permissions and make
the user the webserver and the group my group.

 * Yup and still no luck…I’ll just make them an ftp account. I can’t figure this
out, i’m just wasting my time.
