 * Using either FTP or the web hosting manager file manager (probably cPanel), navigate
to the <webroot>/wp-content directory and for the “uploads” directory check what
are the permissions and what is the ownership ? The directory must be writable
by the webserver (php) program, just what this should be varies with your hosting
company, ask their support for the settings. It is almost certainly wrong to
set the permissions to 777 (let anyone read / write / create anything) as this
is a serious security vulnerability, for instance anyone with a hosted account
on the same server could do anything, however 777 is often seen on localhosted
setups where while it is not great it is harmless enough.

 * Unfortunately I don’t have access to FTP. The site is hosted on AWS and I was
poking around the console and was completely lost.
 * I am used to cPanel access and using a client to log directly into the server.
It’s so easy that way, not sure why AWS is so complicated, but I am unable to
ask their support forum because I don’t have access.
 * If I had FTP credentials I could solve this pretty quickly. Thanks for your reply.
 * Also, why did this permission all of a sudden change? Seems to be congruent with
the new directory 2018/01 being created with the new year.
