We are currently experiencing an issue with how USPS shipping options are being applied to lightweight orders (under 1 lb) through our WooCommerce store.
We are using the following plugins to integrate USPS services:

    Issue Description:
When customers place an order and select a Ground shipping method during checkout, but admin panel shipping option shows the First-Class Mail for packages under 1 lb and Ground shipping method option is not populated via WooCommerce Shipping & Tax. This results in:

    • Lack of full tracking information
    • A mismatch between what the customer pays for (Ground) and what is shipped (First-Class)

    Our Requirements:
We would like the system to always use USPS Ground Advantage, even for orders under 1 lb, to:

    • Ensure full tracking is provided
    • Align with customer expectations when they choose a Ground shipping option
    • Maintain consistency and professionalism in our order fulfillment

    Request:
    Could you please advise:

    1. How can we configure the integration to prioritize or force USPS Ground Advantage for all packages, regardless of weight?
    2. If this is a limitation of the plugin(s), is there a recommended workaround or setting that would allow us to default to Ground Advantage?
    3. Is there a way to disable First-Class as an automatic selection for shipping labels?

We appreciate your support and look forward to resolving this so we can continue to offer a seamless shipping experience to our customers.

  • Hi @moumitacds,

Thank you for reaching out, and I completely understand how challenging it can be when there’s a disconnect between what your customers select at checkout and the actual shipping label that gets generated. Ensuring a smooth and professional fulfillment process is crucial, so your concern is absolutely valid.

The situation where First-Class Mail is automatically used for packages under 1 lb is common and generally expected due to how USPS structures its shipping services. USPS recommends First-Class for lightweight shipments, and as a result, most integrations—like WooCommerce Shipping & Tax—are built to follow this logic by default. This isn’t necessarily a flaw in the plugin but rather how the USPS API determines the most cost-effective service based on weight.

That said, this automated selection can create confusion, especially if your customers expect Ground shipping when they choose it at checkout. The good news is that there are ways to address this by adjusting your shipping configuration. Many shipping plugins allow you to customize the shipping methods shown to customers. By disabling or hiding First-Class Mail, you can ensure that USPS Ground Advantage is the only available option, promoting consistency between what customers see and how their orders are fulfilled.

For more control over shipping methods, you might consider using plugins like Table Rate Shipping for WooCommerce by JEM or WooCommerce Advanced Shipping Packages. These plugins can help enforce the use of Ground Advantage regardless of package weight. Additionally, you can review the settings within WooCommerce Shipping & Tax to see if First-Class labels can be manually disabled.

If you’re looking for a more robust solution, platforms like ShipStation or Pirate Ship, which offer direct USPS integration, may provide greater flexibility in managing and customizing your shipping options.

Lastly, since a third-party plugin is involved—USPS Simple Shipping for WooCommerce—it’s worth reaching out to their support directly to confirm whether there’s a way to enforce Ground Advantage across the board. They may have additional settings or recommendations tailored to your use case.

Aside this request, if you’ve been enjoying using the plugin and like the support you received, we’d appreciate an honest review from you: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/plugin/woocommerce-services/reviews/#new-post
