Variable Product Image Thumbnail Src isnt the same as the data-o_src

As a follow up to my original post which is still unresolved: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/removing-product-image-keeps-thumbnail/
I’ve discovered that in the source code of the page, the img src doesn’t match that of the data-o_src. This seems to be related to the variable product, but is also why the thumbnail isn’t matching the image properly. Any thoughts on how to resolve this?
