Firstly, thank you for this great plugin and for your commitment to keeping it updated.
I run a video website, and I use WordPress Popular Posts to display the most popular videos each day on the site. Is there any way to pull the Youtube video thumbnail to use as the thumbnail for the popular posts on the plugin? I’ve tried telling the plugin to get the image from the featured image, first image on post and first attachment but these all return the default “No thumbnail” image. If it is custom field, what should I put as the value for the custom field? I just embed the video urls straight onto the website.

Many thanks for your help 🙂

    Hi @tostox,

Firstly, thank you for this great plugin and for your commitment to keeping it updated.

    You’re welcome!

I’ve tried telling the plugin to get the image from the featured image, first image on post and first attachment but these all return the default “No thumbnail” image.

    • Did you set a featured image for your popular posts?
    • Did you add an image to your popular posts?
    • Did you attach an image to your popular posts?

If it is custom field, what should I put as the value for the custom field?

The name of your custom field (eg. youtube_thumbnail_url).

If your custom field returns the URL to the actual video and not the URL to the image you want to use as thumbnail then I’m afraid it won’t work. WPP expects the custom field to return an image URL.

Hello Hector, thanks for your prompt reply. I thought I wrote a response here yesterday but it seems to have disappeared.

Did you set a featured image for your popular posts?
Did you add an image to your popular posts?
Did you attach an image to your popular posts?

I don’t do any of these things. I simply insert the video link into each post. I was hoping that WPP would recognise that each post is a video and automatically grab and display the thumbnail like WordPress does on the first page.

    Do you take feature requests?

    Many thanks 🙂

    Do you take feature requests?

I do but in this instance -and before you ask- I’m going to say I’m sorry but not interested (for now at least, might change my mind in the future.)

Integrating WPP with third party services like Youtube so the plugin can automatically fetch the thumbnail from each video would also mean having to eventually provide support for other services as well (eg. Vimeo, DailyMotion, TikTok, etc.) This is something I’m not really willing to do at this time for various reasons, including but not limited to:

    • I’d need to keep checking for API changes in every supported service to make sure the plugin is still able to retrieve the thumbnails from them. This alone can be a lot of work and I’m just one guy maintaining this plugin for thousands of websites out there.
    • I’m a full time web developer for a living and so my spare time is nowadays quite limited. Just can’t dedicate as much time to the plugin now as I’d love to. If something breaks (see previous comment) then I won’t likely be able to issue a fix as soon as possible.
    • Implementing this feature -as already pointed out- will inevitably lead to others asking me to support other services as well. I simply don’t have the time nor resources for that right now.

For now, while this may seem “inconvenient”, the easiest way to have your popular posts display a thumbnail is for you to set a Featured Image.

    Hello Héctor,
Thanks once again for your reply.

This would be quite an important feature for me so I would be happy to pay a fair price for it. I can search for a developer on a freelance platform like Upwork etc. However as this is your plugin and you already know it inside out, it makes sense to ask you first.
If you deliver it as a once off amendment to the plugin for instance via Upwork then you don’t need to make any changes to the plugin as it exists on ww.wp.xz.cn, and you don’t need to make any ongoing commitment to support the YouTube API or any other service.
In the future, if I do need any further changes, I can always ask you first, and if you are not available, I can then ask other developers on Upwork etc.

    Might this work for you?

Thanks for understanding. And yep, that would be fine – except forum rules expressly forbid offering/requesting paid work so we really shouldn’t be talking about that over here.

Great Héctor, thanks for letting me know.

I will contact you via your website (and mark this thread as resolved) 🙂
