I saw this plugin coming in 2025, but haven’t heard much of it anymore. Changelog is without date so difficult to tell when which update happened, download peak happened in August 2025.

I am just wondering because …

    • I am using it on a couple of sites but haven’t noticed an actual difference
    • I remember some features got into some of the WP releases in the last 6 to 9 months or so
    • Also plugins like WP Rocket, Cloudflare come with similar features

Overall, difficult to say if it makes any sense to even use it. I could just uninstall it from all sites an probably would not notice any difference (but I can’t tell for sure, so input from people behind the scene would be helpful to better evaluate).

I personally would be happy, if other users also comment, unfortunately WP forum rules do not allow it. I should get email notifications if a user dares to add a comment 🙂

    Thanks

Hello! See this part of the plugin readme:

This core Speculative Loading functionality was merged into WordPress 6.8, but it only prefetches with conservative eagerness by default. In contrast, this plugin defaults to prerendering with moderate eagerness (i.e. when interacting with a link), and it provides a user interface to customize the mode and eagerness via the “Speculative Loading” section on the Settings > Reading admin screen.

So this plugin provides you a UI to opt-in to more aggressive speculations than what core does by default. Note that the performance improvements provided by Speculative Loading are only when navigating from one page to another page on your site. It does nothing for initial visits, such as from search or social media. I also wrote about this last year including some comparisons of the different configurations.

Got it, thanks for providing the insights and sharing that link to your blog.

I am interested, how can you do the tests here when loading depends on mouse movements and time you hover and click on the button. How are the tests actually performed identical between each method?
