This is crazy, and can break sites. You are the only plugin we’ve used that has no setting for this and that’s stupid. Ever thought about how many people in the real world do not incorporate staging? * Suppose you write some bad code on Monday, and discover it on Tuesday, and then you break sites and we come back only to find that it was your plugin that conflicted with someone else’s code. * I’m giving it one star until you explain this. * I personally cannot believe that you have the balls to think that auto-updating is the way to go, considering all the plugins out there that can conflict with yours and leave you with a ton of pissed off people one day. Ever thought about how many people in the real world do > not incorporate staging? * Regarding the option to disable automatic updates, there’s actually one, called** automatic updates for minor versions (security and maintenance releases only)** which can be found under _General Settings_ screen. Furthermore the automatic update can also be disabled programmatically. * > Suppose you write some bad code on Monday, and discover it on Tuesday, and > then you break sites and we come back only to find that it was your plugin > that conflicted with someone else’s code. * I just want to assure you that I’m driving extensive tests before each release, and the automatic update only occurs for security and maintenance. Basically an automatic occurs only for minor versions, eg: from 4.9.3.0 to 4.9.3.1. It hangs in the handshake with google, and that is not acceptable. Speed came back immediately after deleting it. * Re: Your ridiculous auto updating… * You should think of the last 20 years as Microsoft updated quote-unquote, “Security Issues,” and in some instances over the years have created total havoc around the world, all because of their updates. All the while having to come back in a matter of days only to fix them. * Plugins, on the other hand, are a matter of compatibility. And unless you have 100 plugins installed on 100 different testing installs, then you should not rely on your coding gut instinct. I’ve seen the best, most elite coders, fall on their face and ego thinking they are superior only to have one character on one line break another plugin or be incompatible with it.. * I strongly disagree with your auto updating, no matter what the reasoning you may have. You are infringing on our freedom to decide whether or not to update. It’s always best practice for end users to wait a day or two (or a week) to see if the author comes out with a new update because of issues. In fact, I just saw an example last week with a plugin that was updated 3 times in 3 days because of compatibility and/or bug reports. * At least, when a plugin offers their updates, the end user can therefore know, right away, that it was your or another author’s fault, and then it can be addressed and fixed. * There are too many newbies out there, as well as ppl who do NOT do staging, mirrored backups, etc., nor would they understand that, one day they login, only to find their site is down, not knowing who to blame, or what happened. * YOU are the only plugin that is doing this that I’VE EVER used, and you are no longer going on 214 of my sites. * Have a nice day. I completely agree with the OP. Before I do any updates, I write the version of everything I update to in a readme file (Both the Before and After version). That way I can easily track down a plugin that is causing issues. Otherwise it would be a nightmare to track it down, especially if a plugin interacts with multiple plugins badly. I check my plugins on a regular basis, so keeping them up to date manually is not an issue. * For the Love of God I hope this does not become a trend, hoping I recognize that this is being done to one of my plugins, and/or lucky enough to see the opt-out button. This is perhaps the stupidest idea I have seen in my 3 years of using WordPress. It is bad enough with the occasional WordPress core automatic security related updates, but I can live with one thing that does this.
