   open source alternatives?

 * _WordPress is Open Source._ It is licensed under the [GPL](http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html).
   WordPress comes with plenty of [useful features](http://wordpress.org/about/features/),
   it can be expanded by hundreds of [plugins](http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins),
   and skinned by over 300 [themes](http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes). For

 * IMO, to truly experience WordPress, you should make your own test installation
   and just try it out.

 * I’m trying the test installation now but I’m having troubles so I’m starting 
   to think I need some motivation to stick with it at this stage…

 * that’s a question i ask my users. most of them like the idea of using plugins/
   themes to enhance the presentation of their personal site and extend functionality,
   even for those with minimal knowledge of php and web publishing terminologies.
   10 years ago, a web publishing platform like WordPress would cost a fortune. 
   give it and try and see it for yourself. 🙂
