 * When I try to re-arrange the widgets in the post or page edit, as soon as I update
   they return to the previous.
 * It has become extremely irritating, as the way WP wants to arrange the widgets
   does not fit my logic.
 * I guess it’s because I’ve locked some file somewhere. I just don’t know which
   one.
 * Any ideas?

 * Have you tried:
 * – deactivating **all** plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works,
   re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
 * – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

 * Hi esmi,
 * yes and yes…
    I’ve de-activated all plugins – didn’t help… I’ve switched to Twenty
   Ten – didn’t help…
 * I have several blogs on the same hosting account (HostGator) and this issue happens
   only at some of them. It very annoying 😉 🙁
 * Help much appreciated.

 * Have you tried:
 * – [resetting the plugins folder](http://codex.wordpress.org/FAQ_Troubleshooting#How_to_deactivate_all_plugins_when_not_able_to_access_the_administrative_menus.3F)
   by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause
   problems.
 * – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a **fresh** download
   of WordPress?
 * – increasing the memory available to PHP?

 * ad 1) followed the instructions given – didn’t help
 * ad 2) re-uploaded admin/includes from a fresh download – didn’t help
 * ad 3) increased the memory (wp-config.php) to 64Mb – didn’t help
 * ad 4) checked the database. No error but run repair – didn’t help
 * Do you want access to see what happens?
 * Thank you once again 🙂

 * It does sound like a db issue to me. Maybe a problem updating a record in the
   wp-options table?

 * You lost me on that one….

 * My best guess is that something is stopping the widget position data being stored
   in the database. Since you’ve ruled out a theme or a plugin as the possible cause,
   that just leaves the server or the database itself as the root of the problem.
 * Have you noticed any other problems saving data – post updates, plugin/theme
   configurations etc?

 * Hi esmi,
 * Thank you so much for keep trying to help me.
 * Actually i have just been told (yesterday) that my rss feed was corrupted too.
 * I have worked all day yesterday and up until now to get hold on that problem –
   and with some luck…
 * But, and perhaps you can help me with that too, of some reason when you try to
   subscribe to the feed, you are asked to log in ?!?
 * I’ve tried to ask HostGator if it had to do with some server settings, and it
   seems not to be the case.
 * It seems that some file has been password protected (I can access the feed if
   I’m logged in (Admin or subscriber doesn’t matters))
 * Could the two cases be connected?
 * I’m pretty desperate about the not working rss, so I open an other thread on
   this too, just in case you have no input on this.
 * Once again, thank you for your efforts.

 * The widget thing and the rss thing is NOT connected.
    I managed to solve the
   rss error and it didn’t solve the widgets thing.
 * An other strange thing that has happened is, that when I add a custom field and
   click the button, the field get added but it doesn’t become visible until I update
   the post. If I delete it again, it disappears right away as it should.
 * So far I haven’t noticed other problems than that.

 * Can you try installing a second copy of WP in a sub-folder and importing the
   posts from your current install into the new one? It might help to determine
   if this is a database issue.
