Widgets in Discover

I am trying to add a widget to the theme Discover. I wish to place the widget right next to the slider to the left, where it says ‘Write your welcome headline here’. I have tried editing a few files which I felt were relevant but no changes show. Plz help me with the coding changes here.

The site is not live yet. So no link as of now.
