It should be noted that I spent several hours researching this over the last 3 days before resorting to posting here in an effort to not post something that was already covered.
I would appreciate any help.
I guess I could just backup everything and try it, but thought I would drop in here and ask.
Hello Crazy (Winnipeg?) Geek,
I’ve installed a few different instances of WordPress on the same domain, and they don’t seem to interfere with each other.
Example:
http://www.domain.com (WP installed in root, /public_html/)
dev.domain.com (WP installed in the dev folder, /public_html/dev/)
These installations work fine.
The different installations of WP don’t seem to interfere with each other when they’re installed in different directories, so what you’re describing sounds like it’ll work.
I’m not 100% about installing Multi-site, though. I’ve just installed Multi-side on a add-on domain (/public_html/extradomain.com)/, and there seem to be menu options missing in my Dashboard menu. I don’t think it’s due to the add-on domain or the “interference” of the other WordPresses on my domain.
Thanks jd-fb.
I have also installed WP multiple times under one domain and I know they don’t interfere with each other but was not sure how multisite would effect them. I’m sure it won’t, but I need to make sure since this is a live site. Don’t need any unnecessary downtime.
Does anyone know for sure?
Will Multisite installation effect other WordPress installations on same domain?
No it will not. Physical folders always take precedence over the VR ones WP multisite uses.
Hey Mika,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I actually just watched your video presentation about Multisite yesterday on wordpress.tv and that answered a ton of questions.
I’m kind of thinking its not necessary now though, but will be thinking more about it later on if I decide to add more sites to that domain.
Thanks,
Kevin
p.s. Marking this topic as resolved. Thanks again!
