 * Hi. Like many of you, I’ve been trying to import a WordPress.com blog to a newly
   created one I’m hosting myself. And like many, I’ve been pulling my hair out.
   For me, the export process works well. The function spits out an .xml file which
   I download to my desktop. The import part of the maneuver is where things go
   wrong. In the new blog, I’ve tried both importing a wordpress blog and importing
   an RSS feed. No go in either case after numerous attempts.
    I downloaded the
   plugin for the import process and activated it. I’ve tried the various tweaks(
   Chmod to content folder, etc.), but invariably, the function seems to try importing
   for five minutes before giving me the following error message: “The proxy server
   received an invalid response from an upstream server. The proxy server could
   not handle the request POST -admin/admin.php. Reason: Error reading from remote
   server.” I’m desperate to get this new blog set up. Has anyone found a workable
   solution to this? If somebody can pass along a clue, you’ll have my eternal worship.

   reading from remote server.”_
 * How big is your export file?
 * Anything in your web server’s error logs after this happens?

 * I know this isn’t helpful, but too bad wordpress.com couldn’t be exported in
   MT or Typepad format as Matt created the following for large files:
 * [http://mt-export-split.wordpress.net/](http://mt-export-split.wordpress.net/)
 * I had to use a database script when I exported my blog to another host because
   of the size. The RSS feed kept choking itself because of the size of the output
   file. This isn’t possible on wordpress.com.
 * Sorry, keep discussing….

 * The file is 16 plus megs. I THINK I checked my php settings and it’s set to accept
   20 megs.
    I wrote to Netfirms, my host, and they suggested this. Problem is,
   wordpress.com spits out an xml file, not an sql file.
 * We would suggest using PHPMyAdmin to export the WordPress
    database tables and
   then import it them using the PHPMyAdmin tool with the Database Manager Site
   Tool of your Netfirms Control Panel.
 * This is the other method (as opposed to the RSS import)
    suggested here: [http://wordpress.org/support/topic/35508](http://wordpress.org/support/topic/35508)
 * Information on PHPMyAdmin import is found here:
    [http://support.netfirms.com/idx.php/0/357](http://support.netfirms.com/idx.php/0/357)

 * Netfirms, huh? Hrmm… Just to warn you, you’ll be back with [Permalinks](http://codex.wordpress.org/Permalinks)
   issues…
 * Back on track:
 * Yep, you won’t be getting a sql file from wp.com.
 * You could fall back to the RSS import, I suppose, but you’ll lose (among other
   things) all comments. I just wrote a quick summary on that in a similar thread:
   [http://wordpress.org/support/topic/96584?replies=11#post-484269](http://wordpress.org/support/topic/96584?replies=11#post-484269)

 * At this point, I’d be happy to get even segments of my old blog in there. I tried
   the RSS way, imported the .xml file and got the error listed above. I’m not sure
   exactly what Netfirms is trying to steer me toward with their phpadmin explanation.

 * I have been trying to import my free wordpress.com blog to hosted site I purchased
   from AN Hosting. While, importing I get the message that all of the 200 and odd
   posts have been imported successfully, when I go to view site, I find that only
   the recent page is displayed. All links to categories, archives, previous posts,
   etc result in 404 error. Earlier, I thought, it may be due to theme related issues,
   however, the problem persists on different themes. Could some one please help?

 * What are you using to import? Is it this plugin? [http://www.technosailor.com/wordpress-to-wordpress-import/](http://www.technosailor.com/wordpress-to-wordpress-import/)

 * Yes, I have used wp-db-backup.php and wp-xmlmigrate.php. I got link to import
   wp.com file only after installing the above files.

 * I have also loaded wordpress.php in wp-admin/import folder as instructed. In
   the plugin panel the description of the plugin appears as “WordPress XML Export.”

   I hope, I have not made any mistake. Please help.

 * I am also able to see all the posts in the “Manage” panel. Also, open any of
   them for editing, viewing, etc.
 * I am sorry I am providing info at intervals instead of in one go. However, I
   felt more info should help you diagnose the problem fast.

 * Vicharak – got a link?
 * Sounds like your [Permalinks](http://codex.wordpress.org/Permalinks) are broke
   based on your description. Follow that for troubleshooting tips.
