 * Hi. Like many of you, I’ve been trying to import a WordPress.com blog to a newly
created one I’m hosting myself. And like many, I’ve been pulling my hair out.
For me, the export process works well. The function spits out an .xml file which
I download to my desktop. The import part of the maneuver is where things go
wrong. In the new blog, I’ve tried both importing a wordpress blog and importing
an RSS feed. No go in either case after numerous attempts.
    I downloaded the
plugin for the import process and activated it. I’ve tried the various tweaks(
Chmod to content folder, etc.), but invariably, the function seems to try importing
for five minutes before giving me the following error message: “The proxy server
received an invalid response from an upstream server. The proxy server could
not handle the request POST -admin/admin.php. Reason: Error reading from remote
server.” I’m desperate to get this new blog set up. Has anyone found a workable
solution to this? If somebody can pass along a clue, you’ll have my eternal worship.

 * ‘Thanks for your pointer. It should solve my problem. Because, when I was setting
permalink default, I was asked to replace script in .htaccess file.
 * Unfortunately, though this may sound silly, but I have not been able to locate
any .haccess file on my server installation or even in extracted folder of wp
2.0.5 package. My m/c has windows xp os while my host has apache-php-mysql combination
as I am required to use cPanel.
I tried to try index.php file, however, it does
not have similar looking script to replace.
 * I am not a tech expert but feel that I can generally follow logic of certain
processes, particularly if they involve use of data bases. I am a novice in the
use of php and apache, though.
 * I know, you can solve this in a jiffy but am I bothering you too much, especially
   during festive season?
In any case, my good wishes to you and your dear ones
for a happy x-mas and New year!

 * log into your blog and go to Options -> Permalinks.
 * Save what’s there. If WordPress can, it will automatically modify or create your.
htaccess file. If it can’t, it will tell you what the contents should be and
   you’ll manually edit it.

 * ‘Thanks for very quick response. I have noticed what you have mentioned. wp is
unable to write new script as the file editing permissions have not been given.
I am not able to write or give permission because I can not locate the file.
Hence, I had made a request to let me know the location of .htaccess file.

 * It is in your main WordPress installation directory.
 * It is, like all files that start with a “.”, hidden.
 * Make sure that whatever you’re using to look for it (FTP Client?) is set to show
   hidden files.

 * i hate to bother you time and again but you appear to be my only savior. Despite
making hidden files visible, I could not locate .htaccess file in the “blog”
folder. Then I tried to visit file manager through cPanel. There is only one .
htaccess file in the blog’s parent directory named “public_html.” Should I edit
this file with the new permalink script? ‘hope you will understand my difficulty.

 * Nope, create a new one to go into the WP directory. This may help: [http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks#Where.27s_my_.htaccess_file.3F](http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks#Where.27s_my_.htaccess_file.3F)

 * Dear HandySolo:
 * Your reference was very useful as, following instructions, I could solve my problem
   in a jiffy.
 * I am writing to you now because I did this only a few moments ago as I was holidaying.
 * Thanks a million for your help.

 * Hi,
 * I used the Technosailer plugin, exported my wordpress.com (gauravonomics.wordpress.
com) posts into an XML file (5.6 mb), and tried importing on my new WordPress
2.0 blog (gauravonomics.com/blog). I’m getting a message saying: “The uploaded
file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive in php.ini.”
 * Please help.

 * @guara – ask your host if they can increase the “upload_max_filesize and post_max_size
directives in php.ini” or see if the plugin can import the XML file from a “local
   server path” instead.

 * I am trying to import a wordpress.com blog into my self hosted wordpress blog.
The import function seems to be broken.. both with the old plugin and still wtih
the new 2.1 install. When I try to import the .xml file, it acts like it is working
and then says done down in the bottom left but the page is blank when it should
be asking me which author I want to attribute the posts too etc…

 * I’m having the same issue as kjstanfield, but with a hosted wordpress to hosted
wordpress export. Both have 2.1 installed. The export worked fine — but when
I try to import the .xml file it also doesn’t kick in to asking for the author
attribution. When I go to the uploads section in the admin panel, the file is
uploaded, but it hasn’t imported. The exported .xml file is 1.89 MB so I don’t
believe that it is a size issue (but could be wrong).
 * Any suggestions? I also tried the RSS import and it did the same thing — uploaded
the .xml file in to the uploads folder but didn’t do the actual import.

 * Yep…the plugin’s not working for me, either. I get past the name thingy, and
then it loads about one entry before it stalls out and says that it’s done…which
is news to me, since I have 40+ entries.
 * (You would think that this wouldn’t be a problem…grrrrrr…)

 * Same issue here.. why hasn’t this been resolved yet???

 * I have the same problem — that I go to [http://www.DomainNameHere.com/wp-admin/admin.php?import=wordpress](http://www.DomainNameHere.com/wp-admin/admin.php?import=wordpress),
select the 5.35meg XML file to _import_ to WP2.12. This is an xml file I _exported_
   from WordPress 2.1.2.
 * After 45 seconds of working on the import, everything on the page, below “Import
WordPress”, disappears and there is no option to map fields or such, as others
have told me **should** appear once the file is successfully imported.
 * I’ve tried entirely **new** installs of WP2.1.2 each time I tried importing the
file. I’ve created new MySQL databases to try the import. The wp-content and
wp-content/uploads/ directories were manually chmod’d to 777. During install,
they were automatically set to 755. Perhaps, if they need to be at 777, that’s
something that ought be looked at for future releases.
 * Since March 12, when I exported the file, I’ve had **no** luck at getting the
file to import, even after stopping in #wordpress to see if anyone had ideas.
 * The issue is also discussed at [http://wordpress.org/support/topic/97032](http://wordpress.org/support/topic/97032),
but it still is not resolved. Has ANYONE figured out how to fix the WordPress-
   to-WordPress import?
 * The old database is gone, and this **_is not_** a test.
 * When I attempt to do the import — which doesn’t import to the MySQL database —
as others have mentioned, the xml file does show up in the “uploads” tab in the
WP’s admin area — renamed so that the extention (*.xml) is no longer an extension,
rather a part of the name, such as FileNamexml.
 * The problem remains: WP2.12 just isn’t doing with the imported file what it should
be doing, according to the documentation.
