 * Is there any way to force the usernames to be something other than “wa_contact_4963234”?
   Like, even if it just automatically detected the email before the @ as the username,
   that would be less confusing.

    Can you share with us how you use username?
 * Actually, we can use part of email as username, or any other option, the only
   WP requirement is username should be unique. So, could be John and John_234322
   in the list.
    Also, we need to investigate how this change will affect other 
   users of the plugin.
