 * I’m currently using Subscribe2 to provide email subscriptions to posts for my
   users. However, this plugin isn’t very consistent and there’s not guarantee these
   emails even arrive.
 * I noticed that the new WordPress.com blogs have a wonderful subscription feature
   with options:
 * “Notify me of follow-up comments via email.”
    “Notify me of new posts via email.”
 * below every post.
 * Does anyone know a plugin that works like this? Is this something built into
   WordPress that for some reason I can’t figure out how to use?
 * Cheers,
 * Erich

 * [@erich](https://wordpress.org/support/users/erich/),
 * I have no idea what code WordPress.com are using. Self installed site using the
   WordPress code from WordPress.org are different in that the servers at WordPress.
   com are hosted and managed by the folks at WordPress.
 * When you self host you are subject the restrictions and limitations imposed by
   the hosting company so they they can deliver a reliable service. this will very
   often mean restrictions being imposed on emails to limit the risk of the servers
   being used to send spam emails.
 * These same limitations frequently impact on Subscribe2 and Subscribe2 is blamed.
   Try asking your hosting provider about what limitations they are imposing and
   you’ll probably find out why Subscribe2 is not working reliably on your site.

 * Thanks MattyRob for the feedback,
 * What you said makes sense with my experience. Sometimes Subscribe2 works, and
   sometimes it doesn’t, but I have lots of different installations on different
   hosts.
 * I’m guessing the problem lies with phpmail in some way and how my host supports
   it. Once I take the site live, I’ll be able to use smtp from one of my email
   accounts, but it’s got me a little nervous.
 * I was just hoping that someone would provide a plugin to mimic the WordPress.
   com functionality. I love how it’s built right into the comments writer, provides
   comments emails, and has several single-signon options. I guess you can consider
   this a feature request for future versions of your plugin.
 * Thanks!

 * [@erich](https://wordpress.org/support/users/erich/),
 * There is already an option to add a check box to the comments form in Subscribe2.
   It supports more recent versions of WordPress and the theme you are using must
   be correct in calling the right functions or actions – but it is in there.

 * Hmmm. I may have to look into that. Last question: do you think using the smpt
   protocol instead of phpmail would solve most of the server problems? Or are those
   monitored by hosts as well? What’s your experience and recommendation (if my
   web hosting company refuses to work with me)?

 * [@erich](https://wordpress.org/support/users/erich/),
 * It depends on the hosting provider – they all do things differently. It also
   depends on where the SMTP is and how you are accessing it.
 * If the SMTP is a paid and authenticated service you should be fine. If it’s authenticated
   and remote or local again you should be okay but there are still likely to be
   some limitations on volume (as you are not paying). If it is unauthenticated
   you will still probably hit problems.
