# WordPress.com-Stats API key confusion

 * I have an api key for my wordpress.com account. Is that API key supposed to work
   to activate the Stats plugin on my wordpress.org installation? It doesn’t. I 
   get this error message after inputting my API key:
 * Bad site URL (hostname invalid or unsupported)
 * I have checked several related posts but have not seen an answer. Thanks.
