 * hello, I am brand new to this and completely confused. =(
    1) I did the simple
download of wordpress using Dreamhosts download. 2) I put it in wordpress.root.
com 3) But now when I create a page, it shows up under wordpress.root.com, but
I want it to show up directly in root.com 4) I tried to go under General Setting
and change the Site address (URL) but my field is uneditable (as is the WordPress
address (URL)) 5) I went to the Permalinks area and tried to enter http:/www.
root.com but now it says “You should update your .htaccess now.”
 * I don’t know how to do that and I have a feeling that’s not really the answer
   to my problem.
 * Please, can you explain how I can get my actual site to be on [http://www.root.com?](http://www.root.com?)
And where exactly should my wordpress install be?

 * Thank you for the reply but given I’m new:
    a) I don’t know how to do step 1:
Create the new location for the core WordPress files to be stored. Where exactly
do I go to do this and how? and b) I’m unable to do steps 3 and 4 given my URL
   fields are not editable?

 * Are you self-hosting WordPress or using a wordpress.com site?

 * Self-hosting, I did the DreamHost.com one-click install.

 * a) You need to use [FTP](http://codex.wordpress.org/FTP_Clients) (or whatever
file management application your host provides).
 * b) In that case, the url fields in Settings/General should be editable – **unless**
you’ve previously [changed the site url](http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL).

 * oh boy, this is sounding difficult.
I’ve never previously change the site url.
If I need to use FTP, is there a link to step-by-step directions for what exactly
   I need to do?
 * Is perhaps the easier way for me to delete wordpress off of wordpress.root.com
and reuse the one-click install into the right place? If so, how do I delete?

 * Yes – I think it would be far easier for you to re-install WP. since you used
a 1-click install, there should be a similar 1-click un-install option that you
can use. Try asking your hosts for assistance if you can’t find it.
