• newbie here.
I followed the install istructions and get error 500 when going to the install.php (the files are in the correct folders on my host)
I tried changing wp-config.php /** MySQL hostname */ hostname to the one my host gave me. but still get the error.
I checked the permissions on the files and they are all set to 777, and my dbuser is set as a DBA.

    what am I doing wrong?

  • Hi

Error 500’s usually involve invalid code in the site’s .htaccess file. They have nothing to do with the things you are checking. Since you don’t even have WordPress installed yet, you might report the issue to your webhost and see if they have any suggestions. You may need some changes in the way your webhosting account is configured on the server.

Since 500 errors can also mean your web host has Resource Management software that kills any long-running processes, the first place to start is to talk to the Support folks at your web host. Give them an exact time and date of the 500 error so they can go through their logs. They should be able to tell you whether the 500 occurred as a result of a process being cancelled for using too many server resources. Or whether it is a configuration error, etc. with WordPress itself.

In summary: 500 can mean so many different things that the only clue you’ll get will come from the logs that your web hosting company has access to.
