    Dear all

    I have a problem with products, which should be displayed in more then one subcategory. If I do so, for example one product displayed in 4 subcategories with the same name, but under 4 different maincategories, I got a problem with the bread crumb on the product page itself.. as there can only be displayed one category and always the top one category from the sidebar is selected as well.. and not the actual in the menu selected one.
    To describe my example little more, in my case products for motorcycle. so we have 4 different motorcycles (Tenere 700, Africa Twin, BMW R1250 …) as main categories, in every motorcyclecategorie the same subcategories (Exhaust, Lubricant; Brakes, etc etc) If I create a product, for example an Motorex engine oil which is usable for all 4 Motorcycles, I put the product in all 4 subcategories (Lubricant) by clicking the for subcategories (Lubricant) in product editor of Motorex Oil Product. If I then select the Motorex Oil in the Shop under Tenere / Lubricant / Motorex Oil the breadcrumb and sidebar for example shows BMW R1250 / Lubricant – and not Tenere / Lubricant …

    How can I create one product, displaying in different subcategories with the same name without having that problem?
    I really struggle with that problem since days.. and can’t find a solution online.

    I would really appreciate your help!

    My categories look like this: All subcategries got the same name.

    BMW R1250
    -> Exhaust
    -> Lubricant
    -> Brakes
    ->….

    Honda Africa Twin
    -> Exhaust
    -> Lubricant
    -> Brakes
    ->….

    Yamaha Tenere 700
    -> Exhaust
    -> Lubricant
    -> Brakes
    ->….

  • Howdy @schmid82,

    That is a great question. While you can have multiple categories added to a product, it’s not possible to choose what category is displayed based on the path the customer chooses to arrive at the product. The primary category will still be shown.

    This post explains this a bit more:

    Dear Three Son

    Thank you very much for your reply! I am so happy to hear any ideas, anyhow also in your mentioned post there is unfortunately no acceptable solution.. I really can’t believe that I am the only one with this problem, and why there is not a custom solution from WP / Woo for that issue?

    Is every one just using one single subcategorie for every product? For me this is unbelievable.. Hopefully you are able to deliver some more/other information to me and we can solve this issue togehter.. 🙂

    Cheers

    Hi @schmid82,

    This is a tough one. You’re welcome to use as many categories as you’d like to have with a product. There’s just not a way to specify which category should be displayed based on the path the user took to arrive there.

    That’s actually a good thing for SEO. Otherwise, you’d have lots of duplicate content on the site which would hurt your rankings.

    Just something to think about.

    This old thread does mention a snippet you may be able to use as part of a template override in your theme. I haven’t tested it out, but it might be a starting place.
