I ran a scan – it came up with critical hacked files – I deleted them – and now my website is dead. Is there any way to recover my website? I cant even log into it anymore!

It’s is new and has just been setup – so no backup!

But I have done a lot of work.

Is there anything we can do?

I look forward to your reply.

    Cheers,
    Christian

  • It’s likely that you inadvertently trashed some WordPress files… you should be able to manually re-install the WordPress core and your site will come back up.

Any page/post/site configuration resides in the WordPress Database, not as hard files on your installed site directory, so you likely haven’t lost your page content(s).

I appreciate your fast reply – so when you say re-install the wordpress core – How do I do that? It asks me to delete WordPress and the install it again – or is there a better way? I did a manual version update but that disnt help.

What exactly is asking you to delete WordPress and install again? I thought your site wasn’t working?

It’s really impossible to know what’s happening without seeing your site from an Admin perspective – we can only guess from here at this end.

If you’re not a site developer yourself, then you may want to hire one to assist you. Wordfence I believe also has a for-fee service that may help you.

I just don’t know how to manually re-install the WordPress core – thats all…

I am used to loading wordpress onto my domain and then loading the theme – I was hoping you could show me a document on how to do it. Or help me in some way – How do i get in contact with wordfence? They direct me to this site!

Would you fix this via FTP? or via cpanel?

Im very upset and Im not a real developer – so I am a bit lost to tell the truth. And thank god you are helping me. I am not worried about paying – I just need my site back so I can get back to work…

I can give you admin rights if you want to quickly see if its bad or not!

I just uploaded the wordpress core – the wp-admin and wp-includes files over to the dead wordpress site and it has not helped – I even tried renaming the .htaccess file – and that did nothing.

So it lookls like Wordfence destroyed the whole website!

Why would it say its critical and the files need to be deleted – then when you click to do what it needs – it kills your site – that doesnt make sense!

Anyway, do you think i should uninstall and reintsall WordPress?

You can do this via file manager in C panel. I suggest reading this here – http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-wordpress/

Christian, with all due respect, you made a mistake and broke your website. Proper-normal procedure is to backup any website and/or files before deleting anything, and do things very slowly and gradually, constantly testing, then restore from backup if things break. If Wordfence indicated otherwise and caused you to nuke files without care, then that’s certainly a fault of Wordfence, but the person who hit the big red switch is you, not Wordfence. As Bluebear suggested, your best move would be to simply hire an expert to get your site back. Said expert will utilize your existing database with a re-installed WordPress. They’ll also check with your hosting provider as sometimes there are backups you may not be aware of.

    Hi Christian,
Sorry to know about troubles you are going through, most probably you missed reading the text that plugin shows in a pop-up box with this warning before deleting files:

If you delete the wrong file, it could cause your WordPress website to stop functioning, and you will probably have to restore from a backup.

Do not delete files on your system unless you’re ABSOLUTELY sure you know what you’re doing. If you delete the wrong file it could cause your WordPress website to stop functioning and you will probably have to restore from backups. If you’re unsure, Cancel and work with your hosting provider to clean your system of infected files.

I checked your website right now and I can see it is showing “Server error 500”, this could be many of things, I recommend starting with:
    – Deleting all the files under (wp-admin, wp-includes) directories and all the files in the root directory except “wp-config.php” file.
    – Download a fresh copy of WordPress, then upload the files under (wp-admin, wp-includes) directories and those in the root directory to your website via FTP.
    – If this didn’t fix your problem, you will have to check the server error log for more details about this “Server error 500”, I recommend checking that with your hosting provider.

    Thanks.
