Effectively the buttons work with Storefront, but when I use my theme, the PayPal plugin is really adding part of its code to the minicart as you can see:
<p class=”woocommerce-mini-cart__buttons buttons wcppec-cart-widget-spb”>
<span id=”woo_pp_ec_button_mini_cart”></span>
Therefore the existing hook in the theme template is working but there is a problem when inserting the buttons.
