    Dear All
I worked my way through this problem and details are as follows.
I could not update from 3.6 with network hence why i posted here
the fix i found was as follows.
manually download and unzip 4.3.1 save it to my decktop ( for ease of location)
Save a further copy ( backup) of the original wordpress in the htdocs file to my desktop ( again for ease of location)
delete in 4.3.1 the wp contents folder
    and the wp config folder
Cut and paste wp contents folder from the back up of 3.6 to 4.3.1
cut and paste the wp config file into the same location
this then will get it to work
however i run into one further problem which was the network sites would give 404 error.
i fixed this by copy and paster the hta access file to 4.3.1
then all worked thanks peter for getting back to me and i hope this helps others.

    Hi Peter
I have moved forward with it quite a way but I have then next snag
where I am is I downloaded manually the latest version
deleted the wp-content file and the wp-config-pnp
then I installed my old files from the back up file I saved ie the named files above back up was Just in case
I then managed to get 4.3.1 in my network folder to work and got the main admin site functioning and one of the three other sites working
but the second and third site show but when you click on dashboard it gives the following error
    Object not found!

The requested URL was not found on this server. The link on the referring page seems to be wrong or outdated. Please inform the author of that page about the error.

    Error 404

    localhost
    Apache/2.4.3 (Win32) OpenSSL/1.0.1c PHP/5.4.7

its seems some file code that is missing but where should i look .
thank you also for getting back
    andy
