Just in case somebody else has the same issue – as I’ve learned the theme should work in 3.5.2, I just removed the older version completely before installing the new one. Now it works.
So in my case these were just two different versions of the same theme in themes folder that caused the problem.

Thank you for your reply! I’ll try to check what the issue might be then. I really don’t want to switch to another theme, Suffusion has long been my favourite.
