Just figured out the issue, replying in case someone else has the same issue. What shows below the full screen image is actually the caption, not the title, and for some reason, all of my captions were mysteriously deleted. Probably in the process of updating NextGen or WordPress. Unfortunately I have to retype all my captions now, but at least it’s an easy fix!
