In reply to: WordPress 3.6 version upgradation errorThis might well be an issue with your theme not being WP3.6 compatible. Can I perhaps suggest that you also post this question in the support forum for your theme developer at http://www.s5themes.com/forums/discussion/alltuts/

In reply to: Am I in the right place? Can I ask why GoDaddy is insisting your site be built on WordPress? If it is your site, surely you can build it how you like? Of course, WordPress is a great way to go, but what about people that use Joomla, Drupal, static sites and the many other ways of building a site?
I have never heard of a hosting provider insisting on sites being built with WordPress, and as I am considering moving some sites to GoDaddy, this is of great interest to me – NOT all the sites I want to move are based on WordPress (yet).

In reply to: Not able to get admin page loadedI went to http://www.helpmegetpaid.net
The site seems to be working fine.
At the bottom of your site, in the bottom right-hand corner, is a “Log-in” link. This takes me to http://helpmegetpaid.net/wp-login.php which presents the correct WordPress login screen.

In reply to: human verification page keeps loopingIf I try that link, I get the popup box asking me to enter the details.
I entered administrator as the user (all lower case)
I entered 6 as the passwordWhen I hit enter it then took me to the standard WordPress admin login screen.
Perhaps you should clear you cookies for your site, and clear your browser cache, then try again. Failing that, perhaps try a different browser – I am not familiar with how that ‘human verification’ plugin works. It all went OK for me using Safari.

In reply to: WordPress 3.6 and jQuery.BlockUI Version problem – solutionI sent it to my plugin author too, so they can roll out the fix to other less technical people hopefully much sooner.
I’m glad I was able to help 🙂

In reply to: jQuery Update? Site crashed!…and not leave everyone hanging like DenverCoder09 – http://xkcd.com/979/ – it’s preferable you not support people elsewhere.
Yes, very funny by the way 🙂
OK, so as NOT to leave everyone hanging …. Kara actually suffered one of those rare, but not unheard of events known as “a coincidence”. She updated to WP v3.6, and then just as she had done that her ISP (hostmonster.com) started suffering major technical issues and server failure, and many of the sites they host became unavailable. Kara, having just updated to WP v3.6, thought it as something she had done, and that the upgrade has failed. It turns out that her site seems to be working quite well when hostmonster.com servers are available – although at this precise point in time they have just crashed again!
Once her ISP hosting her web server has resolved their technical issues, we will take another look at her site to see if she still has any outstanding issues with plugins relating to jQuery.blockUI. Those issues if they still exist – and the solutions (if different from the jQuery.blockUI solution I already posted) – will be posted here. Nobody will be left hanging 🙂

No problem. I will make sure all non-wordpress stuff stays here in future. I was not aware of this rule.
You’re proposing fixing a site ‘quickly’ verses what we strive for, and that is fixing a site in a forward thinking manner where people will be able to apply security upgrades in a timely fashion.
I AGREE with you – except that if someone has a 3rd-party theme that does not work, and they need their site back up NOW, then my advice is still better (IMO).
You’re right, it WILL get them up and running. But it doesn’t actually solve the problem of bad code causing the conflict. We want to fix the real issue, or get them to where it can be fixed, so that they aren’t stuck on old versions of WP, which is not supported and insecure pretty fast.
I completely AGREE. What we are really talking about though is that people should TEST upgrades before they roll them out. Then they find the issues in the test environment, fix at a pace that suits them, and then roll-out to live sites without any problems. BUT – people DON’T always test.
I this example, if Chris had done that, he would have discovered the Theme problem, and gone off to get a fix. Let’s say that fix takes a week. In the meantime his live site would have carried on merrily, happily, at the ‘old’ version for another week until he applied the upgrades again safely.
All I am suggesting is that he puts it back to how it was, spend that week fixing what needs fixing, and then roll-out again safely. Then, he has done it the absolutely correct way – don’t update live until tested – but with a little forwards-backwards step along the way before of ‘testing’ on his live site. No harm done, and my ‘fix’ is actually just putting him back to where he should have been had he been doing this in a sandbox environment instead.

In reply to: jQuery Update? Site crashed! The steps I posted will get over 90% of sites up & running again…
But in this case, running but looking utterly different, with all the work Chris had put into his custom Theme gone! I was not giving 90% of WordPress users advice – I was giving it to 1 person for 1 issue. Chris can then choose what is best for his site from that advice. Make it look like yesterday, or utterly change it and make it run on the latest version today so that hackers don’t bring down his empire (like they are, by inference, doing to all users of WP less than 3.6). I think Chris should have both options and is capable of deciding which is best for him!
Thanks, I will update my profile with a link to an external source should I decide to answer someone’s question again.

In reply to: jQuery Update? Site crashed!Back to another one of the mistakes I made whilst trying to help people… my eMail is in my profile but does not seem to show up when people view my profile. How do I get it to show so they can see it when I direct them there?

In reply to: jQuery Update? Site crashed! What I meant to say was “That is theoretically completely correct, but will not help someone fix their site quickly so that it is no different to how it was just a few hours ago. I think it is far better from a user perspective to have their real-world issue solved quickly and at no greater security risk than they had a few hours ago, and then deal with best-practive issues once the user is happy their site is back to exactly how is was”.
I condensed all of that explanation into “Don’t talk nonsense” which on re-reading, you are quite right, seems a bit rude, so my apologies for that.

In reply to: jQuery Update? Site crashed! As this would have left his site working, but with a totally different theme and utterly different look & feel, I am afraid I will always have to disagree. Nothing will ever make me believe that making a site work today just the same as it did less than 24-hours before is a bad thing. Fix the big things first (website up and running as it was yesterday) would always be no.1 priority for me and my customers. Fixing ‘other’ stuff would be priority 2. Were we talking downgrading many levels, or many months, I would of course agree with you.

In reply to: jQuery Update? Site crashed!I think we might have to agree to disagree on the approach I gave Chris. Chris had a problem – the problem was that his site was dead. The fastest way to get it running was to put it back to how is was the day before. Then his immediate problem would be solved, and he could take as much or as little time as he chose to fix the upgrade (and security) issues. I would still recommend that approach to anyone. Saying that going back to how a site was yesterday is not recommended is ‘technically’ correct, but does not address the issue of getting a site up and running and working FAST.
My approach does not introduce ANY additional security risks over and above what his site was exposed to as of yesterday. IF you are saying he made a major mistake in going back to how it was yesterday, then you are also, for all intents and purposes, saying that every single website that did not upgrade to 3.6 NOW has made that same mistake!
When giving advice, I agree it is good to give ‘theoretical best practice’ advice – but I would always try to also give real-world practical advice.
Chris did not have a problem with security issues, chris had a dead website he wanted to be working again. If someone needs their site working fast, and going back to how it was the previous day is fast, then that surely is the best advice to solve his immediate problem. You ‘best practice’ advice is great, and something to be taken care of, AFTER he has solved his immediate issue.

In reply to: jQuery Update? Site crashed! The reason I gave Kara my eMail is that her problem was absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with WordPress, it was to do with failing servers at her ISP, causing her hosting platform to fail. I am happy to continue to discuss completely non-wordpress related issues here, but I thought I was doing the right thing by moving a non-wordpress ISP-specific technical issue offline, so as not to clutter what appeared to me to be a WordPress related forum. Sorry.

In reply to: jQuery Update? Site crashed! You are quite correct. I DID say 3.5. I can see now how that use of shorthand might be misinterpreted. Doh!
What I actually meant was “go back to your version from yesterday, whatever version that might have been, as it was perfectly good for you yesterday, so will be perfectly good for you today – until your theme is fixed and you can upgrade safely to 3.6 again.”
I did not add the option of staying at 3.6 and changing the entire theme of his site, as it seemed to me that most people would want the site that they had working and looking nice yesterday to work and look nice in exactly the same way today.
I hope my meaning is more clear now 🙂
