effectively the installs were brand new so version 4.0.0.0 I have always employed the policy of accepting updates as soon as I am notified in the dashboard so while I cannot say for definite it would have been the last published version 3.x

I have just seen you have release 4.0.0.1 which fixes a number of ‘fatal errors’ I have just tested this and success, it does not crash the site or give the error message. I am now working through the setup wizard, so fingers crossed I will be able to get the site up and running properly again. I will close this ticket and open a new one if I need more help. Thanks for your time.

    Hi, thanks for the reply

I have restored from the server but the original membership structure has been lost I don’t think I can get that back now (I have moved the files away from the live structure in order to get the site back up.

I went through the test and first disabled all plugins. Then I down loaded membership 2 and activated it but I got the same message as before. This time I deleted the files after the test and the site stayed up.

I then changed the theme, I use twentyfourteen by default so on the off chance I disabled this and used twentyfifteen instead. The experiment had the same results with the same error. I am happy to try with another theme if you can give me a preffered name?

The site is now up, but all membership content is now visable, though I have removed the menu so unless you know the urls you can’t navigate to it.

I don’t have enough knowledge to know how to check htsaccess ow wp.config.php, I have run the site for 2 years without being a coder and I have never had a need to.

Can you advise next steps, please?
