To conclusively check whether the issue is coming from the plugin or from the server environment, we recommend running one quick test directly on the server.

Please access your Docker container and run the following command:

var_dump($zip->extractTo("/var/www/html/wp-content/plugins"));
$zip->close();
'

Don’t forget to change your path if it is different from the one used in the snippet above.

This test uses the exact same ZIP extraction method that the plugin relies on internally.

I understand the confusion, and I’m happy to clarify how WP File Manager handles backups.

When you create a backup, there are two ways to manage it:

1. From the “Backup & Restore” section inside WP File Manager
   If the backup is visible there, you can normally download it or restore it from the “Actions” area.
2. Directly from your hosting server
   All backup files are stored on your hosting server itself — inside the directory:
   /wp-content/uploads/wp-file-manager-pro/fm_backup

However, based on what you described, here are two important points:

1. If the backup was deleted inside WP File Manager

If the “Delete” button was clicked from the Backup & Restore section, the backup files are immediately removed from the server.
In that case, the backup folder will appear empty, and no download action will be available.

2. Backups do not move if hosting was changed

Since backups are stored on your old hosting server, they do not transfer automatically if you have recently changed hosting providers.
You would only see the backup files if they still exist on the same server where the backup was originally created.

Please note that we do not store any of your website data on our servers. All backups created through WP File Manager are saved directly on your own hosting server.

If you’re still unsure about the missing backup files, we recommend checking with your hosting provider. Some hosts manage backups differently based on the plan you’re on, and in certain cases they may automatically remove backup files on shared hosting environments as part of their policy.

For this reason, it’s best to reach out to your hosting support to confirm whether any cleanup or removal has occurred on their side.

There were security vulnerabilities in older versions of the plugin, and we fully acknowledge that. As soon as these were discovered, our team patched them immediately and released updated versions. This is why we strongly recommend always using the latest version of the plugin, as it includes all security fixes and improvements.

That said, simply seeing hidden files or suspicious plugins on the server doesn’t automatically mean our plugin caused the issue. File-management tools often get blamed because they reveal files that were already placed on the server through:

• outdated or vulnerable themes/plugins
• weak admin passwords or compromised accounts
• insecure hosting environments
• malware infections that existed before installation

Because our plugin provides access similar to FTP, it often becomes the first place users notice these problems but it’s not always the source of them.

If you can share any logs, suspicious file names, or details from your hosting provider, we’ll gladly review them to confirm whether anything is connected to our plugin at [email protected] .

For extra protection, you can also use a security plugin like Wordfence, which can scan for malware, block attacks, and alert you early about threats.
