For now, I’m just going to disable the feature. Let me know if you’d like me to re-enable it for you to look at. Thanks!

Just a quick follow up: after playing around with all the options, I decided I really should continue with my current multi-site setup (separate site for each comic.) I can get Webcomic to include multiple comics in the main site but the options for customizing each comic’s ‘page’ is too limited this way. With sub-sites, I can make each comic’s ‘page’ look however I like. (I already knew this from the last time I experimented with this nearly two years ago, but I guess I needed to re-discover this to be sure.) 🙂

Anyway, one useful thing I learned from this experience is that Webcomic 5 appears to work well with more WP themes now. In the past, this was one of the reasons I stuck with Inkblot for so long. Inkblot is a fine theme but I wanted to explore other themes for my comics sites but didn’t have much luck back then. In yesterday’s tests, Webcomic 5 seemed to work fine with nearly every theme I tried.

Just thought you’d like to know that.

    Keep up the great work!

P.S., never solved the refresh issue and for now I’m moving on. I’ll check this again when the next WP update comes out.

Just a little more info for now (still in DesktopServer, not the live site.)

I tried this in Firefox and got the same results: blank window on New Collection, and no immediate return to the Admin Settings window. After manually clicking back and refreshing, I found another Collection in the list.

Next I tried deleting the extra Collections (up to six now. Yikes!) Same result; blank screen after deleting. If I refresh on the blank page, I get the following error:

    ERROR: options page not found.

When I manually clicked back, I was alerted with ‘Sorry, you are not allowed to access this page.’ Probably because it no longer existed?

Next, I tried clicking back one step farther, and this brought me to the Admin page with the deleted entry still visible. Finally, I refreshed from *this* page, and the entry disappeared.

Ok, four more to go… 🙂

Thanks for the prompt reply Mike!

Just for the record, my test site in DesktopServer is running the following: WP 5.3.2 and PHP 7.3.1.

Maybe this is a local problem with DesktopServer on my laptop? If I get a chance, I’ll try a test on my live site and let you know if it works properly there.

    Wait…a…minute…

This might be a refresh problem.

When I returned to my first test project in DesktopServer, I found FIVE Webcomic collections waiting for me. My guess is that Webcomic did create a collection each time I clicked New collection, it just didn’t properly return to the Settings window.

Maybe this is a compatibility bug between Webcomic and the latest WP? Anyway, for now it seems maybe I can at least continue working on test project.

I’ll revisit the New Collection button problem a little later and report again if I learn anything new about it.

    Ok, a little more info.

I tried this in a copy of my current website in DesktopServer (a local testing environment.) Even here I’m seeing the same blank window after I click New Collection.

Still don’t know if this is a compatibility problem with DesktopServer or the latest WP.

Maybe I can try using Webcomic with an older version of WP in DesktopServer and see if it works correctly.

Ack! I noticed that the Webcomic navigation bar is stretching when the page is resized. I guess I need to get the action inside the main wrapper but above the content. That wasn’t working when I tried earlier but I’m sure I’ll sort this out later.*

Anyway, just wanted to mention that for other novice scripters still figuring things out.

*Later: Fixed! It was a dumb PHP format error. I didn’t know I had to wrap the action inside <?php and >. Still learning here. 🙂

Just a quick followup: Webcomic seems to run fine with any of the 7.x versions I currently have to choose from.

I did run into trouble a week or so ago with PHP 7.2 and another plug-in I’m using, Theia Carousel, so I dropped down to 7.1.

All is good again. Marking this thread ‘resolved’.

This morning I finally got to try Michael’s suggestion, and Webcomic is now appearing where I expect to see it on my non-inkblot theme. I still have a lot of work to do on our website reboot but this knocks over a huge roadblock for me. Yay!

If you’re like me and not completely sure what you’re doing when modding WP themes, the landing page where I had to add the Webcomic action was the theme’s home.php, just under the ‘header’ section but above the ‘main wrapper’ section. The exact terminology and placement may vary in your theme but that’s the general idea. Also, if this is a theme that may be updated in the future, the edit should be made on a child theme, not the main theme. (I’ll be doing that here next.)

Oh, one more thing: if you just copy and paste the action above like I did, be careful you don’t copy the period at the end of the sentence. Yes, I know better but I accidentally did it anyway and it took me a moment to realize why the action wasn’t working work. D’oh! 🙂

Thanks again for your help, Michael! I’m going to mark this issue ‘resolved’.

I took a few minutes to look into this yesterday, and I think I understand what to do. With the info you posted in mind, I started poking around Inkblot/Webcomic to see how it was set up there, and found the index/sidebar setup for the other theme is a bit different. But I think I figured out the equivalent places for the actions and will give it a try this weekend.

Will let you know how it goes. When I’m done, I might have to put together a tutorial for other users in my position…and for myself, so I don’t forget how to do this stuff. 😀

If you’d like to see an example, click to any of the comics on my website. I’m just placing the transcript below the main post text under a column line.

I started adding the transcript here because sometimes I don’t have any text content entered here at all, which understandably caused Yoast to give the post a low rating.

Webcomic has a built-in transcript system. I don’t know if Yoast or search engines read from that though. I want to experiment with it during my website reboot, especially if I can get some friends to provide translations into other languages.

    Thanks! That’s good info.

For images, I read that Alt Text is also used in searches. Alt Text might be especially useful for comics, but of course, you’ll want to keep the description or tag(s) you enter as concise as possible.

I admit, I haven’t used Alt Text this way myself but maybe I should.

You could do that but I’ve just been putting it in the post’s text area. I believe Yoast reads from the content but it obviously can’t read a comic unless you write it down. It probably doesn’t matter which area it goes so long as Yoast can read it.

Anyway, it’s easy for me to include a transcript because I write my comics in script form before drawing it, and it’s just a copy/paste when I’m posting a new comic. TBH, I’m not sure how effective this actually is, it’s just something I made a habit of. (I decided a while back I wouldn’t obsess over Yoast too much because I already obsess over too many things.) 🙂

I’m currently re-working our site (littlegreendog.com), and I may switch to some other practice if somebody tells me better.

I’m not sure this is helpful but maybe it will give you some ideas. If you learn anything more useful, please let me know. Thanks.

    Hi Peter,

I’ve been using Yoast and relying on a written transcript of the comic for Yoast to work from. I’m not sure how helpful that actually is but it’s probably better than nothing.

I’m not an expert in this area so, for anybody here who knows better, is the above practice helpful?

    Michael,

Thank you for the detailed explanation! Later this week, I’ll follow your instructions and see what happens.

As you might have guessed, I know just enough about WP & scripting to get myself into trouble, but so far I’ve been lucky to know just enough to get myself out again.

With your advice, I hope I can keep myself out of trouble altogether. 🙂
