It hasn’t had an actual update to the functionality since 2014. * Something is adding a trailing slash, which is probably why you can’t see it in the browser. ie [https://eastshoremarineny.com/page-sitemap.xml](https://eastshoremarineny.com/page-sitemap.xml) shows up as xml. [https://eastshoremarineny.com/page-sitemap.xml/](https://eastshoremarineny.com/page-sitemap.xml/) does not. If you go to “view source” you can see the sitemap. To find out what’s doing it, start by disabling all caching, and deactivate each plugin one at a time. I’d say that’s probably what’s causing such a high number of pages to be indexed. No physical file exists.
